Team Ethic Crucial For Pearson
City manager Nigel Pearson paid tribute to the togetherness of his squad, after the Foxes moved up to third in the npower Championship with a 2-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday.
A first goal of the season for Danny Drinkwater and a fine strike from Ben Marshall towards the end of a contest City generally bossed made it back-to-back wins for Pearson’s men, who are now unbeaten in four.
It was a pleasing afternoon for the Foxes boss on his return to a ground he graced for seven years as a player, but he deflected praise onto players, whose collective performances continue to make them a force in the division.
“I thought the side that went out there today did a really good job and it’s about a group ethic if you’re going to get any success in this division.
“The team ethic is crucial because how can you discuss the merits and abilities of players if they’re not together as a group? You don’t have a chance of playing at your best.
“I like the fact that they’re together and that gives us the foundation to get performances like we had today.
“It wasn’t an overly sparking performance, but it was thoroughly professional. I thought we played some really good football at times, but we did the job we had to do.”
Drinkwater’s first goal of the campaign was a just reward for one of City’s most consistent performers so far this season, while Marshall, another back at his former club, responded perfectly to his reintroduction to the starting eleven.
“Danny works hard at his game and sometimes beats himself up too much,” Pearson said of his opening goalscorer.
“His overall contribution alongside Andy King in the middle of the pitch was very good and for him to get a goal is great.
“Marshy is very well liked and very well respected here. He took his goal exceptionally well and we’ve got goals throughout the team at the moment.
“The most important element today was winning game and, while I wouldn’t say we were comfortable, it was well deserved.”
